Battle of Bannockburn

Battle of Bannockburn (Glasgow Road, Whins Of Milton, Stirling, Stirlingshire) – in 1314 AD, a battle over the future of Scotland was fought between Robert the Bruce (King of Scots) and the English under King Edward II. Over the two days of battle, Edward’s army was repeatedly thwarted by the Scots stubborn resistance before finally finding themselves trapped by the surrounding terrain with no room to maneuver their huge force. The result was an unprecedented rout of King Edward’s army. Robert the Bruce’s victory, and the morale boost that spread throughout Scotland eventually led to an independent Scotland in 1328.

A visitor center has been set up (by the National Trust for Scotland) for those wanting to learn more about this battle (located 45 minutes west of Edinburgh). Witness the sights and sounds of medieval battle first-hand including ancient battle strategies, weapons and armor. Led by the ‘Battlemaster’, every visit culminates in a Battle Room Experience, with visitors either leading their own division of medieval soldiers in a dramatic interactive Battle Game or observing how the events panned out at a Battle Show. Admission: £11.50 (adult), £8.50 (seniors / children), £30.50 (family – 2 adults and up to 4 children). Hours vary – see the National Trust for Scotland website for an updated schedule: www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/bannockburn
